Safety Tips for Halloween

It’s that time of the year again, and KTXS-12 has some tips that law enforcement says is part of a program that dates back to 2004. While your child is going door to door trick or treating, you can usually tell if someone is not handing out candy if their porch light is not turned on. According to Mike Wolfe at the Community Supervision & Corrections Department in Taylor County, this may also be part of the program as mentioned above which is called “Lights Out.” This program is designed to keep sex offenders away from children who are going to be traveling door to door. This year 80 total people will be attending the Lights Out meeting. At the program, they will be receiving counseling, and from a registered sex offender therapist from 6 to 9 p.m. This will help officers who may have to respond to a call about predatory behavior. While no one wants this to happen, at least there will be 80 suspects that will be immediately crossed off the list since they will be at the meeting.

There are also other safety tips to keep in mind while your children go door-to-door. Fred Biddle at the Department of Public Safety said it’s vital that people stay on sidewalks. He also urges drivers to be wary of children who might be distracted by the evening’s festivities. Kids are going to be living in the moment, and they might forget about looking before they cross the street.

Biddle also suggested that parents try to incorporate some reflective material into their children’s costume and to give them a flashlight to carry while they are going door to door. Also, monitor your kid’s candy and if you notice anything unusual, discard the candy in question. Candy that is unwrapped should be thrown away since it may have come in contact with something dangerous.
